Silver Coins of Ancient Rome Collection
An astonishing collection of genuine coins from the mighty Roman Empire
One of the largest political, economic entities the world has ever seen, the Roman Empire has been a supreme source of fascination for the best part of 2,000 years – and so has its coins.
Authentic and Captivating…
Whilst you can read about Rome, and the tales of debauchery, betrayal and murder, the Silver Coins of Ancient Rome Collection enables you to hold real Roman history in your hands. Your collection begins with the near 1,800-year-old ‘Gordian III (238-244AD) Silver Antoninianus’ – available at just $149. That’s $150 off the series price!
Your ‘Gordian III Silver Antoninianus’ will be followed by an array of Roman silver coins – each month with a tale to tell. From the great empire under Septimius Severus (193-211AD), to the notorious and unpleasant time of Caracalla (198-217AD), to the depravity of the sun-worshipping Elagabalus (218-222AD) – this collection will hold you spellbound at every step.
Handstruck, with a tale to tell
More than just a medium to facilitate the exchange of goods and services, coins offer a compelling insight into the time and place they were issued – and into the people who used them. Struck by hand nearly 2,000 years ago at official mints throughout the expansive empire, the coins of Ancient Rome are perhaps the most powerful illustration of this phenomenon.
Because they were handstruck, often by mint employees working in pairs, Roman coins were naturally variable in size, shape and weight. They also varied significantly in terms of design. Reverse designs could feature any one of the great array of Roman Gods, or military triumphs, or Roman architecture – as well as be used for propaganda purposes. Most would bear the portrait of the Emperor, but even the obverse varied throughout a reign, with the inscription reflecting a ruler’s changing titles and honours. Both work of art and historical artefact, each coin is unique.
With coinage one of very few effective methods of mass communication in Ancient times, it is perhaps no surprise that coins reveal so much about life in the Roman Empire – and why they are such a tremendous source of fascination today.
