An official issue of Britain’s Royal Mint, this 99.9% pure silver Proof coin forms a truly outstanding celebration of the abrasive genius of Benedetto Pistrucci, and his most famous work – the St George & the Dragon design.
Arriving in England soon after the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, Pistrucci was commissioned by Master of the Mint, William Wellesley Pole, to provide portrait models of George III for new gold and silver coinage. A skilled gem engraver, Pistrucci produced a series of stunning designs including the St George & the Dragon motif for the 1817 Sovereign. Pistrucci’s neo-classical masterpiece was then adapted for the 1818 Silver Crown, acknowledged today as one of the world’s most beautiful coins.
Painstakingly remastered using a combination of traditional techniques and state-of-the-art technology, the Royal Mint’s Great Engravers St George and the Dragon 2024 £5 2oz Silver Proof has breathed new life into Pistrucci’s spectacular work. A stunning recreation of the original 1818 Silver Crown, distinguished by exceptional detail in the designs and exquisite raised edge-lettering, this magnificent collector coin is also notable for the limited availability. The limited edition was set at a mere 2,950 coins!
