Honouring one of the giants of the Pleistocene Epoch – known as the Ice Age, beginning around 2.6 million years ago – we are delighted to present the Royal Mint’s Steppe Mammoth 2024 50p Cupro-Nickel Brilliant Uncirculated Coin!
Developed in collaboration with Natural History Museum palaeobiologist Professor Adrian Lister, and featuring artwork by palaeo-artist Robert Nicholls, the coin honours the Mammuthus trogontherii. Known as the steppe mammoth, this enormous herbivore was one of the largest beasts to exist during the Pleistocene age, having an average shoulder height of 4 metres and average weight of 10 tonnes!
