With a story that spans millennia, Britannia is an icon without compare. Created by the Romans to represent a province at the edge of the empire, Britannia first appeared on the coins of emperor Hadrian around AD 119. Centuries after Rome’s legions withdrew from Britain, during the reign of Elizabeth I, the idea of a female figure commanding the seas was revived. Britannia was struck on the coins of Charles II in the seventeenth century and for more than 350 years, the icon has appeared on the coins of every British monarch since.
For 2025, The Royal Mint’s new Britannia coin continues the story, featuring a reverse design by Bradley Morgan Johnson inspired by the icon’s connection to the sea. Having immersed himself in Britannia’s legend, Bradley Morgan Johnson looked at sculptures of the icon to inform his design. This new depiction of Britannia shows a commanding figure gripping a trident and holding the viewers’ gaze as she stands above rolling waves that lead to a burst of rays from the sun.
