Encompassing both sides of a key juncture in Australian currency history, we are proud to present the Australia 1972-74 Phillips/Wheeler Commonwealth & Australia Banner $1-$20 Uncirculated 10-Note Set!

When decimal currency was introduced in 1966, the banner on Australia’s new notes was as it had been since the first predecimal notes were introduced in 1913 – ‘Commonwealth of Australia’. The Australian Labor Party, elected in 1972 with Gough Whitlam as Prime Minister, sought to express our increasing independence from Britain in a variety of ways, including through our currency. Thus, in 1973, during the Phillips/Wheeler signature combination, that the banner on our notes changed from ‘Commonwealth of Australia’ to read simply ‘Australia’.

Apart from being a bold statement of independence, this momentous change also created a highly collectable series. As a result of the modification of the banner, there were now Phillips/Wheeler notes from the $1 to $20 bearing the ‘Commonwealth’ banner, and Phillips/Wheeler notes from the $1 to $20 bearing the ‘Australia’ banner!

An irresistible opportunity to secure a comprehensive overview of this major landmark, we have Phillips/Wheeler ‘Commonwealth’ and ‘Australia’ notes for every denomination in strictly Uncirculated condition!
