About the Bottlenose Dolphin…
Appearing in the Miocene Epoch, 23 to 5 million years ago, the Bottlenose Dolphin is a ‘toothed whale’ located in warm and temperate seas around the world – including the waters surrounding Australia, of course.
Active at day and night, these amazing creatures weigh, on average, 300kg, and can grow up to 4m in length. Fast and athletic – they can attain speeds above 30km/h and can soar six metres into the air! – Bottlenose Dolphins are notable for their remarkable senses. This includes echolocation, which helps the dolphin find objects by bouncing sound off them, as well as electroreception, which enables the dolphin to discern electric fields. Both echolocation and electroreception aid in the pursuit of food, as does the dolphin’s excellent eyesight. The Bottlenose Dolphin is also famous for its intelligence.
Studies have shown that Bottlenose Dolphins have a broad range of cognitive abilities. They have great communication skills, can classify objects, events and ideas, and can understand and act upon human gestures. Bottlenose Dolphins can use tools as well, utilising sea sponges in gathering food, as well as being able to pass information from generation to generation. In addition, they are fast learners. Indeed, the military has successfully trained dolphins to detect mines, and mark enemy divers!
Popularised by marine parks and TV shows such as Flipper, and adored and admired by humans in equal measure, the bottlenose dolphin is a true icon of the ocean.
