About the Bottlenose Dolphin…

First appearing in the Miocene Epoch, 23 to 5 million years ago, the Bottlenose Dolphin is a ‘toothed whale’ found in warm and temperate seas around the globe – including the waters surrounding Australia, of course.

Active at day and night, these remarkable creatures weigh, on average, 300kg, and can grow up to four metres in length. Fast and athletic – they can reach speeds of more than 30km/h and can leap six metres into the air! – Bottlenose Dolphins are notable for their extraordinary senses. This includes echolocation, which helps the dolphin find objects by bouncing sound off them, as well as electroreception, which enables the dolphin to discern electric fields. Both echolocation and electroreception aid in the hunt for food, as does the dolphin’s sharp eyesight. The Bottlenose Dolphin is also renowned for its intelligence.

Studies from the 1970s on have shown that Bottlenose Dolphins have a wide range of cognitive abilities. They have excellent communication skills, can classify objects, events and ideas, and can understand and act upon human gestures. Bottlenose Dolphins can use tools as well, utilising sea sponges in gathering food, as well as having the ability to pass down information from one generation to the next. In addition, they are fast learners. Indeed, the military has successfully trained dolphins to detect mines, and also mark enemy divers!

Popularised by marine parks and TV shows such as Flipper, and adored and admired by humans in equal measure, the bottlenose dolphin is a true marine icon.
