  • An official Australian silver coin of the reign of King George VI.
  • Struck at San Francisco Mint, as USA assisted Australia with coin production during WWII.
  • Bears the Mint’s ‘S’ mintmark above the second ‘E’ in ‘PENCE’.
  • Unites iconic Wheat design with Thomas Paget’s portrait of the king.
  • Australian legal tender issue – spans 16mm in diameter.
  • Offered in superb, pristine Choice Uncirculated condition.

One of the more remarkable chapters of Australian numismatic history took place during the Second World War, when Aussie silver coins were struck at mints in the USA! This is your chance to own one such coin – the San Francisco Mint’s Australian 1943S Threepence – in pristine Choice Uncirculated condition!

Problems with creating circulating coinage during wartime had beset Australia before. During WWI, the threat to British shipping meant that the production of Australian coinage was transferred from London to Calcutta in India. Due to a buoyant economy and an influx of big-spending American servicemen during WWII, the increased demand for coinage outstripped Australia’s capacity for production. The Australian Government sought the assistance of the USA.

The branches of the US Mint in Denver and San Francisco came to Australia’s aid. The Denver Mint produced silver sixpences and threepences in 1942 and 1943, with the San Francisco Mint striking all four silver denominations from the threepence to the florin from 1942 to 1944 – including the 1943S Threepence offered here.

Distinguished by the S mintmark on the reverse, and presented in Choice Uncirculated condition, the 1943S Threepence is a genuine artefact of the Second World War, and a fascinating element of Australian numismatic history. Click add to cart now!
