The bond between Australia and the USA during the Second World War was cemented in various ways – including currency production.

Problems with creating circulating coinage during wartime had beset Australia before. During the Great War, the threat to British shipping meant that the production of Australian coinage was transferred from London to Calcutta in India. Due to a buoyant economy and an influx of big-spending American servicemen during WWII, the increased demand for coinage outstripped Australia’s capacity for production. The Australian Government sought the assistance of the USA.

The branches of the US Mint in Denver and San Francisco came to Australia’s aid. The Denver Mint produced silver sixpences and threepences in 1942 and 1943, with the San Francisco Mint striking all four silver denominations from the threepence to the florin from 1942 to 1944 – including the 1943S Shilling offered here.

Distinguished by the S mintmark below the classic Ram’s Head reverse motif, and presented in Choice Uncirculated condition, the 1943S Shilling is a genuine artefact of the growing bond between Australia and the USA forged in the crucible of war. Click add to cart now!
