The 1934 Proof Set – utterly complete and extraordinarily rare
Issued in the tiniest of numbers, the highly sought after King George V 1934 6-Coin Proof Set is one of Australia’s greatest, most important numismatic rarities. It is believed that as few as 40 to 50 sets were issued, with perhaps less than 10 complete sets remaining in the flawless state of preservation seen here.

The George V Proof coins struck in 1934 represented a rare foray into the production of collector coinage by the Melbourne Mint. To say that the Australian collector market was in its infancy in the 1930s is a major understatement, and the 1934 ‘collector Proof’ coins were struck in astonishingly low numbers. Although the 1934 Proof Set mintage of approximately 40 to 50 is obviously tiny, even those figures do not tell the whole story.
Possibly less than 10 perfect examples of each coin!
Firstly, many coins would have been lost, or, somewhat horrifyingly, even found their way into circulation. Of those that have survived, a majority would be in ‘less than perfect’ condition through mishandling. Lastly, we know for a fact that many sets have been broken up and the coins offered individually. It is likely that the number of surviving perfect complete sets of the 1934 Proof coins is less than ten.
