Born of the Great Depression, the nature of the creation of the 1930 Penny means that this coin is seldom seen in the state of preservation seen here. Due to the economic turmoil, the Melbourne Mint was not required to strike many coins during the Depression Era. No shillings and florins were struck in 1929 and 1930, for example, and no pennies were struck in 1930 - or so it was thought.
