The Sovereign – a masterpiece of numismatic art…

Inspired by medieval legend and rooted in classical tradition, it was the work of the iconic engraver Benedetto Pistrucci. Every Perth Mint Sovereign carries Pistrucci’s masterpiece, united with the Mint’s P mintmark. Four obverse portraits featured on Perth Mint Sovereigns – Sir Thomas Brock’s Veiled Head effigy of Queen Victoria (1899-1901), George de Saulles’ portrait of Edward VII (1902-10), and Bertram Mackennal’s portrait of George V (1911-31).

Highly sought after dates…

An all-encompassing presentation, this inspiring collection comprises some of Australia’s most sought after coins.

Headlined by one of the key dates in the entire Commonwealth Sovereign series, the rare 1926P, the series is also highlighted by the 1899P (3rd lowest mintage sovereign from 1855-1919; just 691,000 struck!), as well as the scarce 1925P, 1927P, 1928P and 1929P. These desirable dates are all included in this prestigious collection – as well as such crucial coins as the scarce WWI era 1916P and 1917P, low mintage 1928P (just 133,000 struck!), rare 1930P and scarce last issue 1931P.

The Perth Mint – a golden history…

The brainchild of then Western Australian Premier, Sir John Forrest, the Perth Mint was established during the last years of the reign of Queen Victoria.

As with Melbourne and Sydney, it was the discovery of gold that created the need for a mint in Western Australia. Determined to stop the flow of gold out of the west and into the east, Forrest saw the creation of a mint as crucial to the long-term interests of the colony. His forthright commitment forced the hand of the authorities, and the British agreed to establish the Perth Mint as Australia’s third branch of the Royal Mint. Although suffering much criticism due to delays in construction, and spiralling costs, Forrest’s enthusiasm for the project would ultimately be vindicated.

Opened amid much fanfare in June 1899, the Perth Mint quickly became crucial to the production of sovereigns for the British Empire. Transforming the raw fruit of the Western Australian goldfields into coins of the realm, the Mint struck sovereigns in every year from 1899 to 1931, becoming known across the world for the precise purity and weight of its coinage.

Although dies had been prepared for the Perth Mint to strike sovereigns in 1932, the price of gold soared. Ultimately, the sovereign was worth more in gold than the value of the coin, and the Perth Mint halted production. The 1932-dated sovereign dies were never required, and the 1931P was destined to be the Mint’s last sovereign date. From 1899 to 1931, the Mint struck more than 106 million sovereigns and 735,000 half sovereigns, issuing coins for Queen Victoria, King Edward VII and King George V.

One of the oldest mints in the world operating from its original premises, now more than 125 years after striking its first sovereign, the Perth Mint is still a powerful force. Indeed, the Mint has established a formidable reputation as one of the world’s most innovative, state-of-the-art manufacturers of collector coinage, and is rightly known as ‘Australia’s precious metal specialists’.
