The ‘Spring Festival’, or Chinese New Year, is a significant annual event in China and around the world, based on the Chinese Lunar Zodiac, known as Sheng Xiao, or Shu Xiang. This is an ancient 12-year cycle that assigns a specific animal to each year – each with its own attributes. Those born in a specific year are said to share the characteristics of this animal.

According to the auspicious legend of the great race, the Jade Emperor proclaimed the sequence of the animals in the zodiac would be determined by the order in which they arrived to his party. They are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig.

The most recent animals celebrated in the lunar cycle were the tiger (2022), rabbit (2023), and dragon (2024). 2025 will be the year of the snake, said to be charming, intelligent and creative!
