Description:

Underpinned by superb designs, a sharp strike and lovely red surfaces, we have two examples of the Queen Victoria 1868 One Third Farthing Proof in flawless FDC condition!

From 1827 until 1913, Great Britain issued the low denomination One Third Farthing (1/12th of a penny) specifically for the colony of Malta, where it was known as a 'grano'. Issued in comparatively low numbers, and issued in very few years, the One Third Farthing was struck at the Royal Mint in London. On just a handful of occasions, the Mint struck Proof versions of this attractive type.

The extensive recent acquisition made by Downies included two examples of the 1868 One Third Farthing Proof - both in pristine FDC quality. Although the mintage is unknown, these 15.50mm diameter coins are rarely seen on the market. Surely struck in the tiniest of numbers, and seldom seen outside Britain, Downies has never previously had the chance to offer the 1868 One Third Farthing Proof to our clients.

Remarkably affordable given the powerful combination of history, beauty, rarity and quality, this is an opportunity you can't afford to miss!
