Description:

An official legal tender tribute, superbly enhanced with full-colour, this unique crown-sized coin forms a poignant commemoration of one of the fiercest, most horrendous engagements of the First World War - the Battle of the Somme.

Fought from July to November 1916, the Battle of the Somme was a series of engagements in northern France pitting the forces of the British Empire and France against those of Germany. The Allies believed that the Somme offensive would deliver a swift victory, but it quickly became a war of attrition. Notable for the rising importance of airpower, and the first use of the tank, the Battle of the Somme is best remembered for mass industrial warfare, horrific battlefields, and appalling casualties. The first day set the tone for the unfolding horror of the battle. British forces suffered an astonishing 60,000 casualties - the worst day in the history of the British Army - and the Germans suffered 10,000-12,000. Thousands upon thousands more men would be sacrificed over the next 140 days. Although figures vary, it is believed that the combined casualty figure was well over one million, making it one of the bloodiest battles in human history.

Honouring those who fought in this horrific encounter, and those who were lost, this unique commemorative coin is...

  • legal tender of the Solomon Islands - measures 40mm
