Marking the centenary of Australia's first action on the Western Front in the First World War, this poignant legal tender coin honours the Battle of Fromelles - a ferocious encounter between the Allies and Germany in northern France over the 18th and 19th of July, 1916.

The Battle of Fromelles was an Allied feint, aiming to discourage the Germans from diverting troops to the Battle of the Somme. Following hours of bombardment from Allied artillery, Australian troops rushed into action, only to meet a well-entrenched foe. The shelling had failed to nullify the most important German machine-gun posts, and hundreds of Australians diggers were scythed down in the blink of an eye. Things only got worse for the Allies, and Australia's first experience of warfare on the Western Front was an unmitigated disaster. A staggering 5,533 casualties were suffered by the Australian forces, and the Australian War Memorial has dubbed the Battle of Fromelles 'the worst 24 hours in Australia's entire history'.

Paying homage to those who served at the Battle of Fromelles, this unique commemorative coin is...

  • struck to Proof quality from 25g of sterling silver
  • taken from an exclusive mintage of just 5,000
  • legal tender of the Solomon Islands - measures 40mm
  • beautifully presented within a plush case
  • complete with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity
