An official issue of the Royal Australian Mint, the 2016 50c Gulf Wars Cu-Ni Unc honours those who served across two conflicts in Iraq in the Persian Gulf.
The first Gulf War took place in the early 1990s, when tensions rose following Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait. Including Australian service personnel, coalition forces overwhelmed Iraqi defences.
Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein remained in power after the defeat, however, and tensions continued to simmer. Those tensions escalated dramatically over the issue of ‘weapons of mass destruction’ in 2003, and the second Gulf War began. The Iraq military was, once again, quickly defeated, and Saddam Hussein’s repressive government was overthrown.
