The Empire Air Training Scheme

Although in a position to increase warplane production for the impending war in Europe, Britain recognised that they lacked the required number of aircrew to man those planes. Indeed, it was believed that 50,000 aircrew per year would be necessary to man the Royal Air Force (RAF), and Britain had just 22,000 before the outbreak of hostilities. Britain put forward a plan whereby its dominions would supply men to be trained as aircrew, who would then serve with the RAF. The Empire Air Training Scheme was born.

Australia agreed to supply 28,000 men to the RAF over the first three years, and would ultimately provide 37,000 before the plan effectively came to an end in late 1944. Many of those men would serve with the RAF in the skies over Europe, standing proudly alongside New Zealand, South African, Rhodesian, Canadian and British aircrew in the fight against the forces of fascism.
