"Struck at the Melbourne branch of Britain’s Royal Mint, the 1919-21 Square Patterns form what is unquestionably one of Australia’s rarest series. Indeed, the number of coins in this highly desirable series is minute. The TOTAL mintage for the thirteen different 1919-21 Square Pattern types is approximately 200 coins!
The mintage was so low because these patterns were part of an initiative to find a lighter alternative to Australia’s cumbersome halfpenny and penny types. A limited number of Square Patterns were needed, as they were to be distributed to a small group of dignitaries, VIPs and government officials. Although the reception was not entirely unfavourable, obstacles were noted – including the number of ‘round’ penny vending machines then in existence. Ultimately, square coins were never issued in Australia, and the 1919-21 Patterns would become one of the nation’s greatest rarities."
