Wreck of the English Flagship 'Association', William III Shillings 1696 (5), badly affected by prolonged seawater immersion Poor-Fair but scarce relics from the wreck of this famous British naval vessel (5 coins)
The 90-gun Ship of the Line "HMS Association" was built by Bagwell of Portsmouth and launched in 1697. Under a complement of 800 officers and men she served in the Mediterranean during the War of the Spanish Succession and participated in the capture of Gibraltar in 1704 during that conflict. In October 1707, carrying gold and silver coin from English merchants trading in France and Spain, she struck Gilstone Rock off the Isles of Scilly and was wrecked with the loss of her entire crew including Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell, a naval officer of distinction and a popular British hero of the day whose body washed ashore the next day and was later deposited in Westminster Abbey. The loss of the Association and her crew was, and still is, the worst maritime disaster in British history. The wreck was discovered in 1967 on Gilstone Ledge and coins have been recovered periodically since then, most being in a very poor state of preservation. The coins recovered from the Association wreck are of added interest in that they are English, unlike most shipwreck coins of the period which are usually Spanish-American or Dutch

Wreck of the El Cazador, Charles III Eight Reales 1783FF of Mexico (KM106.2) VF in ANACS slab attesting the wreck provenance
After the Seven Years War France ceded New Orleans and Louisiana to Spain. Twenty years later the economy in the Spanish territory was under pressure so the ship 'El Cazador' was sent to New Orleans with currency comprising 400,000 Eight Reales and an equal amount of smaller denominations from the Mexico Mint, intended to stabilize the Louisiana monetary system. During the voyage the ship and her cargo was lost without trace (11 January 1784). Without receipt of the currency the economic woes continued which led to Spain trading Louisiana back to France in return for other considerations in Europe. Shortly after, the 'Louisiana Purchase' was negotiated and Louisiana passed from France to the United States. If El Cazador had survived the voyage and arrived at New Orleans with her cargo, it is intriguing to consider how history would have unfolded if Louisiana had recovered and kept by the Spanish |

The wreck was discovered by an amateur diver in 2004 and salvage operations commenced the following year |
