Commonwealth of Australia 1901/Commonwealth Celebrations Sydney medallion 32mm in 15ct gold by Llewellin & Co Jewellers Sydney (C1901/14) reverse engraved "Col J.E.D.Taunton" with the rim engraved "A Souvenir of the Inauguration of the Commonwealth". Test cut on rim otherwise EF or better and extremely rare These medallions were distributed by the Government for various sporting events during the Commonwealth celebrations When taking command of the fledgling Commonwealth Military Forces (formerly Colonial Forces prior to Federation) Major General Sir Edward Hutton established temporary appointments that constituted 'Army Headquarters' for the Military Branch of the Department of Defence, of which Colonel Taunton was appointed as Deputy Quartermaster General. The position was abolished after Taunton's retirement at the end of June 1903
