"Australian Chivalry", Australian War Memorial art folio containing reproductions in colour and duo-tone of official war paintings of the Great War, published 1933, 52 plates, gilt-stamped maroon leatherette covers, some very minimal foxing but the plates not affected, some minor wear on the spine top and bottom otherwise a very nice copy, the nicest example we have offered for some years and quite scarce Plates include the Emden 'beached and done for', Anzac Cove, AE2 in the (sea of) Marmora (sic), Simpson and the Donkey, Lone Pine (a particularly poignant depiction of our boys charging into enemy trenches), the Camel Corps at Magdhaba, the Charge of the 4th Light Horse at Beersheba, Fromelles, Bullecourt, Messines, Ypres, Hamel, the Somme, the Hindenburg Line, Surrender of the German High Sea Fleet and The Final Salute, amongst others. The last depicts the salute to fallen Anzacs by destroyers Yarra, Torrens and Parramatta, at the Dardanelles on the day of the signing of the Armistice. While the Fleet was steaming through the straits, the commander of the Parramatta requested permission to fly an Australian blue ensign, as a tribute to the men of the A.I.F. killed at ANZAC. The answer was "The Commonwealth Blue Ensign may be flown at the portyard in honour of Australia's glorious dead". The Australian destroyers accordingly hoisted their largest blue ensigns and kept them flying until they arrived at Constantinople the next day.
